Since early May 2024, at the request of UNESCO, staff from ACHCO assessed the condition of heritage sites in Herat province affected by an earthquake in October 2023 whose epicentre was reportedly in Zindajan district. Building on a UN inter-agency Post Disaster Needs Assessment, a long list' was drawn up of 80 heritage sites in the affected area, out of which 40 have since been the focus of on-site surveys. The exercise has not only enabled the identification of the most vulnerable monuments following the earthquake but also provided an opportunity to take stock of the condition of heritage sites across the province.
